Tywanda's Hair Regimen

As a busy socialite and entrepreneur always on the go, over the years my natural hair has had to adapt to my ever so changing schedule.  There are times  when I’ve got a few extra hours in my schedule and I’ll take the time to butter up my tresses with love by giving it a great deep condish and doing a flat-twist and curl out or a Bantu-knot out, BUT those occasions come far and few in between.  A majority of the time, I’m co-washing almost daily, sealing with oil and then my hair is either pushed up in a puff, out of my face with a headband and allowed to be a curly fro or pinned back on one side or both.

Some naturalistas have a set hair regimen, which includes a specific wash day, a trim a certain number of weeks, a protein treatment every 6 weeks, etc. etc. I'll be honest.  I play things by ear.  If my hair feels dirty, I wash it. If it feels limp, I give it some protein.  If my twist out is holding strong, I'll keep rocking it.

With that aside, I do have some consistencies:

I never use shampoo or heat except quarterly when I go to the salon to get it straightened and occasionally colored.
I tend to co-wash my hair every other day, especially during this season and wet my hair in the shower in-between co-washing unless I’m wearing a certain dry style like a flat-twist & curl out or bantu-knots out for multiple days. I then spray a moisturizer on and then seal with carrier oil.
I only detangle on extremely wet hair and mostly while in the shower with my fingers (occasionally a wide-tooth comb.)
I’m somewhere between a curly girl or no-poo girl.
I love using homemade products, especially for conditioners, moisturizers and protein treatments.

I trim quarterly when I straighten my hair.
I do a henna treatment every two months
I stick with a basic hairstyle and rotate depending on my time schedule.

  1. Love, love, love your blog... just found you and so excited because I'm in NEWARK, DE now and have been natural since about September 2007... went from the barbershop boycut (yes, a hustler) to the twa to the twists and now shoulder length which helps for PONYTAIL Days, of which there have been many. I'm looking forward to keeping up and being at the next Delaware Expo. Sorry I didn't know about it this year. Keep up the good work.
